A shirt dress is the hardest simple thing to get right: every mistake in the pattern shows on the placket. This one took four toiles and a winter, and it has not changed since 2019.

The buttonholes are worked by hand by Ana, who has been sewing in this building since before I rented the floor. Sixteen of them, about forty minutes a garment. It is the single most expensive operation in the collection and the first thing anybody notices.

Buttons are corozo - a nut, not a plastic - turned in northern Portugal. They chip if you are careless with them, which I would rather explain than replace with resin.
